Last week we declared the August doldrums officially behind us, but it appears that we may have spoken too soon. Once again we’ve returned to mostly flat, range-bound stock market for another week. However, between a few exciting markets (platinum, wheat, natural gas, crude oil) and the ongoing political theater in the United States, there’s been plenty to keep an eye on. Here’s what we’re looking at headed into the weekend.

The August doldrums are officially behind us. September has gone risk-on in spite of a somewhat disappointing NFP report at the beginning of the month. The biggest company in the world has just introduced the newest version of its flagship product (the iPhone 5), the European Central Bank is promising to keep the Euro intact, and Bernanke has unleashed QE3 (or QE∞, considering the open-ended nature). All in all, not a boring week, and certainly more fireworks than we’ve seen in a while, but there’s more to see as we head into the weekend: our weekend reads.

The DNC may have wrapped up the two parties’ debutant festivities, but the politicking is far from over. With every economic statistic being politicized by both sides, and partisan appeals filling the airwaves, one could be forgiven for being a little weary of all the election-centered news coverage. This week wasn’t exactly boring in terms of stories to follow; with all eyes on Tampa for the Republican national convention, Hurricane Isaac making landfall in Louisiana, and Bernanke’s speech at Jackson Hole. However, in terms of market action, the low-volume, range-bound trading we’ve experienced through most of August continued. Fortunately, we’ve got just the thing to spice up your extra-long holiday weekend: our weekend reads.
