We’re happy to review the recent re-release of the documentary “Cancel Crash,” documenting the Stock Market crash of 1987, and how the futures market in Chicago saved the Dow. The story within the story was what was going on the next day, October 20th in Chicago, how three transactions helped saved the markets when no one else was trading.

If we were to ask you how much sand was used in 2013 to frack a well, what would be your answer? Energy companies are expected to use 56.3 Billion pounds this year. With sand mining expected to increase another 20% over the next couple of years, us managed futures folk are wondering if there should be a sand futures market?
Do Investors really have to choose between Rotten Eggs?
It seems like nary a day goes by without a new article popping up hating on diversification. Not because there’s anything really wrong with diversification, but because financial journalism seems to think there’s something wrong with diversification. Take a recent Market Watch article that explains that there’s nothing wrong with the theory of diversification, just that none of the asset classes are worth diversifying in. The only problem is the article leaves out managed futures… We throw it into the mix to see if it changes anything.

A new jobs report dominated financial media coverage today as the Labor Department reported an addition of 203,000 jobs in November, with the unemployment dropping from 7.3% to 7.0%. Stocks responded with a quick jolt. But the bigger pictures has turned to, will this boost in economic data be enough for the Federal Reserve to start tapering? These performance figures should not be relied on independent of the individual advisor’s disclosure document, which has important information regarding the method of calculation used, whether or not the performance includes proprietary results, and other important footnotes on the advisor’s track record.
The mention of general asset class performance (i.e. managed futures did well, stocks were down, bonds were up) is based on RCM’s direct experience in those asset classes, estimates of performance of dozens of CTAs followed by RCM, and averaging of various indices designed to track said asset classes.
The mention of market based performance (i.e. Corn was up 5% today) reflects all available information as of the time and date of the publication.
